A new direction for Sunrise
Bungie is bringing vaulted content back to Destiny 2. That changes what Sunrise is for, so here is where the project goes next.
Vaulted content is coming back
In The Next Chapter for Bungie, Bungie wrote:
We are beginning the work of bringing vaulted Destiny 2 campaigns, destinations, and raids back into the game, where they will be available to all Destiny 2 players.
We do not know yet exactly what this includes. Campaigns, planets and raids are named. We hope strikes, adventures, seasonal missions, PvP maps and events like the Dawning come back too.
It also means Destiny 2 is not dead. People are working on the game, and that may bring new content in the future.
Thank you
Thank you to everyone who joined this project: developers, contributors, moderators and everyone who tested, reported and helped. The support over the last weeks has been amazing.
The new direction
Sunrise started as a way to play content that was gone. That is now less needed. The new focus is modding: making and playing custom content.
Mods still need a game that mostly works. So the work on Sunrise itself does not stop. We are just no longer putting restored content first.
What this means for each part of the project:
- Sunrise. Maintenance and updates on the main repo continue.
- Mission scripts. Merging on SunriseMissions slows down and moves to the background. Pull requests are still welcome, but reviews may take longer.
- Sunrise Studio. Work has started on an editor for the game’s content. It reads your installed game, and it builds your edits into new packages that Sunrise can load. More will be shown soon. Its docs will live in Sunrise Studio.
To Bungie
Thank you for bringing this content back to players.
If you are unhappy with Sunrise existing, please reach out. We will gladly talk.
If you need a developer with “experience” working on Destiny 2, to help bring back old content or to work on new content, feel free to reach out too.
Sunrise is experimental software. Features can change or break while development continues.
